Institute of Directors - Views on Executive Pay

The Institute of Directors has submitted its response to the Department for Business’s consultation on executive remuneration, recently.

Commenting on the IoD’s submission, Simon Walker, Director General of the IoD, said: “The IoD has noted, with growing concern, the rapid rise in executive remuneration at the largest listed UK companies over the last 10-15 years.

We are aware of the difficult challenges faced by remuneration committees in responding to a global market for executive talent. But the current pace of increase in executive pay is unsustainable. The legitimacy of UK business in the eyes of wider society is significantly damaged by pay packages that are not clearly linked to company performance."

Key proposals made by the IoD in its response include the following:

• More diversity amongst independent non-executive directors. Boards with members from diverse professional backgrounds are more likely to exhibit “objective scepticism” in respect of remuneration policy than current or former CEOs.
• Introduction of a binding shareholder vote on executive remuneration policy.
• Engagement of remuneration committees, on a voluntary basis, with employee representatives as part of the remuneration setting process.
• Greater transparency regarding the potential conflicts of interest experienced by remuneration consultants.
• A substantial simplification of executive remuneration packages.

Commenting on these proposals, Simon Walker added:
“A higher level of professional diversity amongst independent non-executive directors will assist boards in aligning executive pay with society’s expectations. Shareholders should also play a more active oversight role.

SaaS Aggregation is the Smarta way to sell software

From The Business Software Centre

www.businesssoftwarecentre.com.

With the growth of cloud based software, innovative companies are realising that SaaS aggregation is the way to acquire many new users of software and services.  Quite simply SaaS aggregation provides end users with a one-stop shop for all the software they need on a pay as you go basis.

Using Rentsoft technology as a core platform for their Business Builder proposition Smarta Enterprises provide all the software needed by SMEs in one easy to access bundle.  Including well known brands such as QuickBooks from Intuit the complete kits are available online or through RBS and Natwest Banks from just £20 per month.  TV Dragons Den star and Co-founder of Smarta Enterprises, Theo Paphitis, sums it up with "Smarta Business Builder provides you with everything you need to run a better business."

In a few words Theo explains the benefits of SaaS Aggregation.  Users get all the software they need.  They are always on the latest version, fully supported, quick and simple to access and best of all they pay an affordable monthly subscription as they use the software.  Gone are the bad old days of paying license fees to different software companies up front and then paying extra each year for support and updates.  With SaaS aggregation one monthly payment means everything is look after for through one dependable supplier.

IoD Breakfast Club at Hartwell House - Thursday 19th January, 2012

Goodwill Hunting?

Have you ever stopped to think about your reputation and how important it is to the success of your business? Goodwill can be defined as the value of the business over and above the value of its assets - reputation is what others think of you/your business.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently. (Warren Buffet)

Goodwill is the only product and only asset that competition cannot undersell or destroy. (Ludwig Borne)

A lot of the value that’s built up in these businesses, goodwill, is often because the founder is an excellent salesperson or business leader. (John Godber)

Over breakfast, this session will enable you to consider the interaction between reputation and goodwill, how these are embodied in trade marks (including business names and domain names), and what can be done to protect them.

The event will be led by Janice Trebble, Trade Mark Attorney and partner of Saunders & Dolleymore LLP, and will take the familiar form of discussions around tables of about 10 people, with a ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ change of places half way through so that you can meet as many as possible during the event.

This promises to be a stimulating and thought provoking meeting at which you will be encouraged to join in and share your thoughts and experiences.

To book - call Claire Fisher, Bookings Administrator on 023 8026 6548  or go on-line at IoD.

The impact of the charismatic leader – raising productivity and profitability

It's an accepted fact that charismatic leaders achieve more through their people. However, until now, it's also been an accepted fact that you're either born with charisma or you're not. That's no longer the case.

Profiles International, the world’s leading provider of online assessments, has conducted extensive research with more than 40,000 managers and leaders, worldwide.  The findings prove that the 'missing' elements of Leadership Charisma can be developed in every single manager.

Hear how it can be done, and the impact it can have on your bottom line, from IoD member, Martin Goodwill, Managing Director of Profiles International in the UK. After a 30-year management career in logistics, Martin joined Profiles International in 2007 and now spends his time advising organisations how to select the right people first time and manage them to their full potential.

Psychometrics in Selling - Free Seminar - Tuesday 25th October 2011

You are invited to attend a free 2-hour seminar: Psychometrics in Selling

One of the features of selling in the last 30 years has been the development of 'sales psychology'. This has created an explosion in the number of psychometric methods available to help salespeople and their managers to be more successful. There is little doubt that a more scientific approach is effective in opening relationships and closing deals. But busy sales directors, managers and salespeople need a process that is effective and that can be used in the moment without complicated questionnaires.

This free 2-hour seminar will explore one particular psychometric which is incredibly easy to use; needs no forms or written analysis; can be learnt in a matter of hours; has been proven to generate business; and ulitmately encourages the creation of outstanding business relationships.

We will cover the following:

· Successful psychological sales skills - using proven tools to increase sales
· Recruiting good salespeople - what to look for; what to avoid
· Successful Leadership- adopt the best approach for each member of the team
· Customer Management- strengthen relationships with even the 'difficult' customers
· Prospect Management- identify the best approach for different personalities

Following the seminar you will receive a written report of your own temperament profile, which will identify your strengths in relation to others.

Time: 9.30 am to 11.30 am (9.00 am for refreshments)
Date: Tuesday 25th October 2011
Venue: De Morgan House, Russell Square, London, WC1B 4HS

To book your free place, please register here . For more information please call us on 0207 100 2520 or reply to this email to walter.blackburn@peopletrack.co.uk. We will confirm your place and we look forward to meeting you and any of your colleagues.

Anyone for Cookies? - by Blaser Mills

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued guidance on new regulations that will affect thousands of UK business owners following the the publication of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2011.

The new regulations, which came into force on 25th May 2011 and which apply to all EU websites, require website owners to get “explicit consent” from users before cookies are stored on their computers. In effect this makes thousands of websites illegal under European law.

Although consent will not be required when a cookie is strictly necessary to deliver a service which has been explicitly requested by the user, the ICO has confirmed that this will be a narrow exception which applies to a small range of activities, such as the use of cookies in online shopping baskets.

The ICO has said it will not begin enforcing the new rules for another 12 months. Businesses should, however, take immediate steps to:
1.Investigate which cookies they are already using;
2.Consider how intrusive these cookies are;
3.Consider how they will obtain consent.

For further advice please contact Blaser Mills, at commercial@blasermills.co.uk
